Green Pastures

2017 / Video, colour and sound / 15 min

Green Pastures encourages meditation and stillness. In 2014, a scientific study from the University of Virginia found that 67% of men chose to inflict themselves with an electric shock rather than sit quietly and think for 15 minutes. Flanagan’s video considers this disconnection from our state of consciousness and reflects upon the effect the modern setting and cyber age is having on our psyche. The work discusses whether the realms of enlightenment are only accessible digitally and poses questions about contemporary masculinity.
